As we age, fine to deep expression lines and dynamic wrinkles can appear, making us feel self-conscious about our looks. Fancy face creams and moisturisers can only do so much and really just hydrate the very upper layers of the epidermis. Injectable wrinkle-smoothing injections using a substance called Botulinum Toxin Type A (or Botox® as this band is more commonly recognised), can help to temporarily reduce the lines and wrinkles that are caused when we create facial expressions, such as frowning, laughing, concentrating and squinting.
This treatment is hugely popular with our patients.
Botox® is a highly-potent, prescribed medicine which has been used for a variety of medical conditions , since the 1970s, such as involuntary muscle spasms, bladder problems and migraines.
Botox® was approved as a safe substance to be injected for anti-aging purposes in the 1980’s after it was found to smooth dynamic lines and wrinkles in the upper face, whilst treating patients for crossed eyes. Botox is a powerful neurotoxin which blocks the nerve receptors that can cause expression lines and wrinkles in the upper face.
The substance offers a temporary effect when injected in to the facial muscles by blocking the signals from the nerve receptors, which in-turn relaxes the facial muscles and prevents expression lines from forming.
Botox can only legally be prescribed and injected by a fully-qualified medical professional and should not be used by a non-medic, such as a beauty therapist.
Most patients who are experiencing both the early and more significant signs of ageing can benefit from a mild to heavier dose of Botox® injections, depending on their individual concerns. However, prior to any injectable cosmetic treatment being carried out, by Dr Bhavin, it’s important to discuss your requirements as well as disclose your medical history in an initial, no obligation consultation. This meeting will allow you to discuss what is bothering you about your complexion, for your practitioner to explain how Botox® may help you, to check your medical history for any contraindications and for you to understand the aftercare required, following the treatment. Once you are both happy that a Botox® treatment will be both beneficial and safe for you to undergo, you can book your appointment for the procedure. In some cases, where there is time and you have no medical contraindications, you may even be able to have the treatment after your consultation. However, we will never pressure you into having Botox® if you need some time to make a decision. It is our duty of care to all our patients to ensure they are fully satisfied and ready, before undergoing an injectable treatment such as Botox®.
Botox® injections are fairly straightforward for a medically-trained professional and there is minimal discomfort as the needles used are extremely fine; so a topical anaesthetic is not usually required. After completing some standard consultation and consent forms, your practitioner will mark the areas to be treated with a white facial pencil (you’ll be asked to make expressions so they can see where the wrinkles form). Depending on how many areas you are having treated, a series of injections will be placed in the specific areas to be treated. It should not take any longer than 10 to 15 minutes and afterwards you’ll be given some aftercare advice adhere to. However, as Botox® injections require no recovery time and do not offer very visible marks on the skin, you can return to your daily activities (within reason) immediately afterwards. You will, however, need to avoid hot baths, saunas and steam rooms, excessive exercise, bending forward or rubbing the treatment area and sleeping or leaning on the treated area for at least 48 hours.
The most commonly treated areas include :-
Crow’s feet (the lines that form around the eyes when we smile or squint)
Glabellar lines (the lines on the forehead between the eyebrows, sometimes known as ‘elevens’)
Forehead lines (the lines that go across the forehead when we raise our eyebrows)
Bunny lines (lines that run across the sides of the nose)
Masseter (using Botox® in the jaw helps prevent teeth grinding and can soften the facial shape by reducing a square looking jaw)
Cobbled chin ( usually seen whilst speaking)
Above the brows and in the hairline for an eyebrow lifting effect
If you are new to having a Botox® treatment, you might feel some concern and apprehension and this is absolutely natural. You may have seen people on TV or even a friend who has had too much Botox® and looks somewhat surprised or their facial expression has been affected. Dr Bhavin is medically-trained and highly-skilled facial specialists who carefully consider every aspect of your facial anatomy before treating you. We believe in only offering very natural-looking results as opposed to that strange ‘frozen’ look that some people seem to like. We will carefully assess your facial contours, skin type and thickness and make an informed decision about the dosage needed, before administering Botox®. Our aim is to make you look refreshed and wide-awake, not shiny or doll-like. We still want you to be able to create facial expressions and for people to notice you for all the right reasons. It’s a duty of care and our ethos, here at the clinic and we will never over-administer Botox®. We would prefer to offer you a lighter treatment first-off, so you can achieve the most natural-looking results possible and feel confident and comfortable having Botox® injections.
Your initial results can be seen from around 24 to 48 hours, post-procedure. However, as Botox® takes a while to affect the nerve receptors and for the facial muscles to relax, expect the optimum results to be seen around 2 weeks after your treatment. It is after this time that you can return to the clinic for a post-treatment appointment and have any top up injections that might be required. Dr Bhavin believes that less is more and we would rather be able to add to the treatment and take it step-by-step, if you are new to Botox®.
Every patient is different when it comes to how long the results of a Botox® treatment lasts. It all depends on how you respond to the treatment and how well you take care of your skin and general health. Botox® does not remain within the facial muscles and is metabolised by the body relatively quickly. The results are the response of the facial muscles, and everyone is unique in how their nerve receptors begin to work again. For some people, especially younger patients who are new to the treatment, results can last as long as up to 8 months. For others, results can last around 3 months before they need another treatment. We recommend Botox® to be administered no more than 3 times in a 12 month period and find that in general, most of our patients have around 2 treatments per year.
