We all would like beautiful lips with definition, symmetry and fullness. Plump and shapely lips are the picture of health, youth and vitality. Over time however, the ageing process can significantly change the appearance of our lips. The loss of substances such as collagen and elastin can make the lips look thinner, more lined and dehydrated. Lip filler treatments have soared in popularity in recent years as they are effective, safe (when administered by a medical professional) and can offer results that can last up to 12 months at a time.
We offer FDA-approved dermal fillers to augment, re-shape, volumise and revitalise the lips, for a more youthful and pleasing appearance, whether it is a subtle or more dramatic change you are seeking.
Dermal fillers are injectable substances which are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA) in a bio-compatible gel. HA is a naturally occurring sugar, found in the body, which helps cushion and lubricate areas such as the skin, the eyes, connective tissues and the joints.
When we age, we lose HA rapidly and this can lead to the depletion of other vital substances within the skin, such as collagen. Restoring the levels of HA in areas of the face, can offer significant improvements to tissue volume and hydration, hence why it is so useful in dermal fillers for the lips.
Dermal fillers come in a variety of viscosities, from very liquid to more substantial thicknesses. Depending on the type of results you require, a lip filler of a specific thickness and durability will be chosen for your treatment.
Most patients who come to our clinic are looking to improve the shape and profile of their lips and can benefit hugely, from a dermal filler treatment in this area. As HA is found in the body, the synthesized version in dermal fillers tends to cause no significant side-effects and is readily accepted by the tissues.
However, before we agree to treat you with dermal fillers, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation with one of our medical practitioners, so that they can check your health and medical history, so as to ensure that this treatment will not only be a suitable solution for you, but will be a safe treatment for you to undergo.
After completing some standard consent forms, you will be invited in to one of the treatment rooms and asked to relax on the treatment couch. Your lips will be cleansed and then a topical anaesthetic may be applied, to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
Once the numbing cream has taken effect, your practitioner will use either a needle or cannula (a blunt-ended needle to minimise bruising) and will inject small amounts of the chosen dermal filler either in the vermillion border (the outline of the lips) in the body of the lips, or both, depending on your requirements.
After injecting the right amount of product in to the specific areas, your practitioner will then mould the dermal filler, so that it creates a pleasing shape and integrates well, with the skin tissues.
The most commonly treated areas include :-
As with any treatment that utilises a needle or cannula, expect to feel some discomfort or strange sensations, during your lip filler treatment. However, it should not be painful, due to the topical anaesthetic as well as integrated anaesthetic within the product itself.
If you are highly sensitive or anxious about pain, you can speak with your practitioner about a fully-injectable anaesthetic, but this is not usually necessary.
The results from your lip filler procedure can be seen straight away, but there will be some swelling afterwards. Sometimes our patients report that this can take up to 5 days to ease completely and many comment that they feel that their lips have gone back to their normal shape.
This is definitely not the case, it’s simply that some patients get used to the look of the swelling, rather than the natural-looking result that is achieved and we always take pictures before the treatment, so that some patients who think there are no changes can really see the improvements that have been made. After your dermal lip filler treatment, it’s important to allow at least 2 weeks for any swelling or bruising to subside, before expecting to see your final results. If after this time, you feel you would like a top up or correction, you can return to us for a second treatment.
We like to offer a natural approach to lip filler treatments and in some cases, we might advise you to build up your lips in two, three or even four sessions. Over-filling the lips can cause all sorts of complications, not to mention discomfort, so we air on the side of caution and prefer that you take a step-by-step approach to dramatically changing your lip shape or volume.
There are many factors that affect the longevity of your results, from your own body’s response and metabolism of HA, to how you look after yourself and your lifestyle. If you sunbathe excessively, spend hours in the gym or smoke, you might notice that your lip fillers may not last as long as someone who doesn’t.
However, every patient is unique and we cannot guarantee the lifespan of your individual dermal filler treatment results. However, your journey with us doesn’t end after one treatment and we can tweak and tailor each procedure so that we can get the very best longevity of results possible.
This might mean offering you a more viscous (thicker) filler in your second treatment, more of the product and advising you on lifestyle tweaks that might help (quitting smoking, exercising less if you do an excessive amount of cardio, eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water, so that the HA maintains its hydration levels).
HA attracts up to 1000 times its own weight in water, so you need to stay hydrated in order for it to do its job properly. Whatever your results from your first treatment session, we will work with you on an ongoing basis to improve and lengthen your results, so that you get the very best from your lip filler treatment. Many lip filler treatments can last between 6 and 12 months and we can discuss with you, the expected lifespan of your results in your initial consultation, prior to the procedure.
