SkinPen Precision Microneedling

SkinPen Microneedling Device

The first FDA-cleared microneedling device, no heat, no light

What is SkinPen Microneedling?

SkinPen, made by Crown Aesthetics, was the first microneedling device to earn FDA clearance, and it remains one of the most studied. It uses a sterile cartridge of fine needles to make thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Those micro-injuries are too small to cause real damage but enough to start the skin's repair process, which lays down fresh collagen and elastin.

Because it works mechanically, with no heat and no light, SkinPen sidesteps the main reason lasers can be risky in darker skin. That makes it one of Dr Garara's reliable choices for acne scarring and overall skin quality across the full range of skin tones. It is cleared for facial acne scars in all skin types and for neck wrinkles.

Microneedling is sometimes called collagen induction therapy, which describes what it does: needle depth can be set up to 2.5 mm, so the same device can treat delicate areas lightly and deeper scars more firmly.

The science

How it works

Controlled micro-injury: the needles create microscopic channels the body treats as small wounds, triggering a repair cascade.

Collagen and elastin: that repair lays down new collagen and elastin over the following weeks, firming the skin and filling depressions left by scarring.

Adjustable depth up to 2.5 mm, so the same device treats delicate areas lightly and deeper scars more firmly.

No heat, no light: nothing is absorbed by melanin, so the device carries a low risk of the pigment changes lasers can cause in darker skin.

Why patients choose it

The benefits

Improves acne scars by building collagen to soften and lift atrophic scarring.

Refines texture and pores.

Softens neck wrinkles — cleared specifically for improving the appearance of neck wrinkles.

Safe across skin tones: no heat or light means a low risk of pigment problems in darker skin.

Minimal downtime — most people have a day or two of redness, similar to mild sunburn.

Works well with serums and regenerative add-ons to support the healing response.

Your journey

What to expect

  1. Before

Consultation and assessment. Numbing cream is applied for around 20 to 30 minutes.

  2. During

The device is passed over the skin in sections. Most people feel vibration and mild prickling. A session runs around 30 minutes.

  3. Immediately after

Redness and warmth, much like mild sunburn, sometimes with light pinpoint marks.

  4. Downtime

Usually one to two days of redness.

  5. Results

Texture and scarring improve over several weeks as collagen rebuilds, building across the course.

  6. Course

Commonly three to six sessions about a month apart, depending on the concern.

Evidence-based

What the evidence shows

Acne scars and neck wrinkles

  • In the manufacturer's clinical studies behind FDA clearance, around 80 percent of patients noticed an improvement in their acne scars and 94 percent noticed an improvement in neck wrinkles one month after treatment, with results reported to last up to six months. These are manufacturer figures and individual results vary.

Microneedling more broadly

  • In a randomised trial, percutaneous collagen induction (microneedling) improved atrophic acne-scar severity by a mean of about 68 percent over four sessions, comparable to a chemical reconstruction technique (Leheta et al., Dermatol Surg, 2011).

A note on skin of colour

  • Most pigment problems after aesthetic treatment come from heat or light being absorbed by melanin. SkinPen uses neither, so it largely removes that risk. For Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin wanting to improve acne scarring or texture, it is often the first tool Dr Garara reaches for. Sensible care still applies: numbing, clean technique and good aftercare with sun protection.

Individual results vary and depend on assessment at consultation. Manufacturer figures are attributed as such.
